Why 2024 USC Commencement Ceremony Has Been Called Off

After the University of Southern California cancelled the 2024 graduating class's valedictorian Asna Tabassum's speech at the commencement ceremony on May 10, USC has now issued a fresh statement Thursday canceling the 'main stage' event of the graduation ceremony entirely, citing 'safety measures'.

"With the new safety measures in place this year, the time needed to process the large number of guests coming to campus will increase substantially," USC announced in a statement.

"As a result, we will not be able to host the main stage ceremony that traditionally brings 65,000 students, families, and friends to our campus all at the same time and during a short window from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m."

The university, however, clarified that while the 'main stage' event remains canceled, several smaller commencement ceremonies will be held across the university on May 10. The individual school ceremonies where names are announce and graduates walk up to the stage to receive their diploma. CBS news reported that at least a 'dozen' such ceremonies are planned.

"We understand that this is disappointing; however, we are adding many new activities and celebrations to make this commencement academically meaningful, memorable, and uniquely USC, including places to gather with family, friends, faculty, and staff, the celebratory releasing of the doves, and performances by the Trojan Marching Band," the USC statement added.

At least 65,00 guests were expected to attend the commencement ceremony at USC on May 10. The university has faced massive protests this far with police arresting at least 133 students from a demonstration recently. The university was also closed down temporarily due to the protests.
