10 lease holders in Colva's panchayat ghar get notices

Colva: Colva panchayat has finally pasted show cause notices on all the 10 shops in the panchayat ghar premises. The civic body, in its notices, has asked the perpetual lease holders as to why they should not be vacated within 15 days on the date of receipt of the notice and possession of the shops be taken over by the panchayat.

Last month, South Goa collector and district magistrate Ajit Roy had issued a show cause to the Colva panchayat as to why land issued to the local body to build a panchayat ghar and community hall should not be reverted back to the government.

The premises, built by the panchayat in 2000, was never used as a panchayat ghar and community hall. Instead the land was used for commercial purposes, in violation of the agreement with tourism department.

In 1992, 500sq m belonging to the tourism department was granted to the local body. In 2000, the panchayat inaugurated the premises but instead of a panchayat ghar, they built 10 shops on the ground floor and a hall on the first floor. The same year the local body signed nine perpetual leases with various individuals, while one shop remained vacant.

As per the 10-year lease contract, the ‘lessees’ were to pay the panchayat Rs 2,000 per month, on the condition that the business not be a bar, workshop, garage or small factory for drugs.

On receiving the show cause from the collector, the panchayat unanimously resolved to issue show cause notices to perpetual lease holders.

On Wednesday morning panchayat secretary Amol Tilve along with staff pasted the notices on all 10 shops. The show cause also states that failure on the part of the lease holders to vacate the premises will force the local body to initiate appropriate action and take possession and confiscate their wares.
