12-feet tall Ganesh idol made using currency notes worth Rs 21 lakh attracts devotees in Maharashtra's Akola

Akola, Maharashtra: A 12-feet tall eco-friendly idol of Lord Ganesh made of Indian currency notes worth Rs 12 lakh has caught the attention of people in Akola, Maharashtra.

The idol was made by divyang artist Tillu Tawri. He used currency notes in denominations of Re 1 and Rs 10, 100, 200, 500 and 2,000 to make the idol.

The idol has been put up for display at the Veer Bhagat Singh Ganesh Utsav Mandal for the Ganesh festivities. It took Tawri three days to make the idol.

"This idol is completely eco-friendly and has been installed on paper canvas with the help of stapler pins. All care has been taken not to damage any currency note," Tawri told news agency PTI.

Since the idol is made using notes worth Rs 21 lakh, police are guarding it.

The 10-day long festival of Lord Ganesh will conclude today, on the occasion of Anant Chaturdashi, with devotees immersing the idols in lake, river or sea. However, Tawri's creation would not be immersed in water as it is made of real currency notes.

"Instead, we will dismantle the structure on Thursday evening and the currency notes will be handed over to the Mandal authorities. This idol does not create any pollution," he said.

The unique artwork has made devotees flock around the pandal to catch its glimpse.

This is not the first time that Tawri experimented with Ganesh idol. Last year, he made an idol using 1,100 coconuts. In 2017, he used different sports items such as balls, cricket bats and racquets to make a Ganpati idol.
