15 minors forced to work in farms rescued from Ghaziabad

GHAZIABAD: At least15 children who were allegedly forced to work at farms as cheap labour were rescued on Monday evening. The children, belonging to Jharkhand , were being taken back home by a labour contractor after their work was finished in Muzaffarnagar , said police.

The boys, aged between 14 and 17 years, were rescued from a roadways bus in Modinagar while they were travelling from Muzaffarnagar to Ghaziabad.

Neeraj Kumar Jadaun , SP (rural), Ghaziabad told TOI that the children were brought to Muzaffarnagar in August 2018 by three men to use them in some agricultural work. After completing the work, the men were taking them to New Delhi railway station from where they would be sent to their homes in Jharkhand.

“These children, along with three other adult labourers, were rescued from a bus. We have detained three contractors for questioning, however, no case has been registered into the matter so far. All the children were sent to a child care NGO and their parents have been informed. They will be sent back to their homes,” said Jadaun.

The officer further said the contractors target these children as they are available for cheaper wages. “Investigations revealed that the children are brought from Jharkhand and nearby states for labour work and after the work is completed they are sent back to their homes. Even their parents are aware of this. The contractors get them at much cheaper wages,” added the SP.
