15,000 bulbs at Mysore Palace to be replaced ahead of Naada Habba

Mysuru: Although the Naada Habba is slated to be a low-key affair this year, the district administration is nevertheless keen on ensuring that Mysuru Dasara lives up to its reputation as a carnival where piety meets spectacle. And since it is Mysore Palace that remains the cynosure of the event, the authorities of the palace board are keen on ensuring that the structure is maintained in a pristine manner to reflect its stature as the pride of the city.

As part of their efforts to keep the palace prim and proper, the board authorities have undertaken replacement of 15,000 bulbs , which are part of the elaborate arrangement for the illumination of the palace.

In all, the palace is illuminated by one lakh bulbs, and seldom has more than 10% of the lights been replaced been replaced at once. Officials at the Mysore Palace Board said that this was perhaps the first time that 15% of the bulbs are being replaced at once.

As of now, the palace is illuminated on Sundays and public holidays for an hour from 7pm to 8pm. However, for the entire duration of the Dasara celebrations, the palace blazes in a halo of luminosity for two hours from 7pm to 9pm.

Bulbs at a higher elevation in the palace are being replaced using drones this year, said officials at the palace. “Owing to incessant rain in the city for the past week, many bulbs have gone defunct. We need around 10 to 15 days to replace these bulbs. We will be using cranes to replace bulbs at places such as the Jaya Maarthanda Gate, where some of the lights are affixed at a height of 80ft,” said one of the electricians at the palace.

Deputy director of the Mysore Palace Board TS Subramanya told TOI that work on replacing the bulbs would start next week.
