1,511 arrested after Panchkula violence, police tells Punjab and Haryana HC

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Police have arrested 1,511 persons in connection with the August 25, 2017, violence in Panchkula after the conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in rape cases by the CBI court in Panchkula. These arrests have been made in 240 cases registered across the state in incidents of violence, arson and destruction of public and private property by the dera followers in 2017.




This information was provided by the Haryana Police on Monday before a full bench headed by Chief Justice Krishna Murari of the Punjab and Haryana high court during the resumed hearing of a petition filed by advocate Ravinder Singh Dhull in the case.


The HC has been informed that of the 240 FIRs, the CBI has presented challans against the accused in 207 cases till date. While probing these cases, 1,511 persons were arrested in more than one case, raising the total number of arrests to 2,644.

Giving details of the FIR, the HC was told that SIT has arrested 40 accused so far. Accused P R Nain, who was a key dera functionary and was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh, was arrested on November 3, 2018.

“Challan/supplementary challans have been presented in the court against 40 accused till now. Aditya Insan has been declared a proclaimed offender and a reward of Rs 5 lakh has been announced for providing information regarding him,” the HC was informed. The police also informed the court that some of the accused, including Jasbir Bakali, Iqbal Singh and Arsh Arora, got interim anticipatory bails from the high court. The court was further informed that a “core group of officers” headed by IGP Hisar range and comprising DIG, special task force, Gurgaon, Sirsa SSP and Panchkula DCP as its members had been constituted to arrest the accused. A report containing the efforts made by the group to arrest Aditya Insan was also submitted before the HC in a sealed cover.
