17-year-old girl electrocuted while plucking coconuts in Vyara

SURAT: A 17-year-old girl was electrocuted and her two friends sustained serious burn injuries while plucking coconuts in their school compound in Vyara in Tapi district on Monday.


Official sources said the three girls studying in 11th arts stream in Dakshinapanth Vividhlaxmi Vidhyalaya in Vyara were plucking coconuts using a steel rod when they came in the contact with an overhead high-tension line.

While one of the girls died on the spot, two sustained burn injuries.

Deceased Radhika Santu Vasava was a resident of Balamvan village in Vyara’s Kukarmunda. Pratiksha Dilip Gayen, 17, a resident of Godha village in Dang’s Waghai taluka, sustained 80% burn injuries and has been admitted to New Civil Hospital in Surat. Akansha Rajit Gamit, 17, a resident of Magovan village in Songadh, was taken to a local hospital in Vyara with normal injuries.

Vyara police sources said the girls were residing in the school’s hostel. The hostel warden had gone out for shopping as it was holiday when the three girls decided to pluck coconuts from the compound of the vidhyalaya.

Vyara police have registered a case and begun investigations.
