2 langurs captured from Mainpuri DM's house, set free

Agra: The district magistrate of Mainpuri had a first hand taste of the simian menace in the city as a ‘langur’ couple created mayhem at his residence, damaging property and intimidating the inmates.

The two adult Grey Langurs, a male and a female, were finally captured by an NGO, Wildlife SOS, with the help of the forest department from the DM’s residence and were relocated to a forest.

A rapid response team of the NGO carefully immobilized the langurs one by one by using darts from a safe distance to sedate the animals.

Under the guidance of the forest department, the langurs were later relocated to a safer and more suitable environment.

Dinesh Chandra, divisional forest officer, Mainpuri, said, “Since, the langurs were causing trouble and threatening the safety of the security personnel, we had to relocate them to a safe place to prevent the situation from getting worse.”

Baijuraj M.V, director, conservation projects, Wildlife SOS, said, “The langurs were apparently agitated and were trying to hide between the tree tops and the rescue operation was quite a challenge. Our team had to make sure that the dart injection struck at the perfect spot so that the monkeys faced minimal stress. Our team has professional rescuers who are trained to handle such situations.”
