2 thrashed in Basanti after extortion bid

Basanti (South 24 Parganas): Two youths were injured in a clash on Wednesday night at South 24 Parganas’ Basanti, where political violence has become the new normal amid lockdown.

Basanti’s Simultala was on the boil after two gun-toting youths entered the local market and started intimidating locals, who beat a hasty retreat but returned to catch hold of the duo and give them a thrashing.

Ijaj Ahmed Laskar and Rashid Ali Gayen were rushed to the Basanti gramin hospital and then to Canning subdivisional hospital. This was the second instance of violence here in a fortnight.

Local Trinamool functionary Mantu Gazi pointed a finger at Youth Trinamool. “Two armed youths terrorized locals to share a part of government money they had got as Amphan relief. People put up resistance,” he said on Thursday.

Yuva Trinamool’s Amanullah Laskar rubbished the charge. “Trinamool leaders do not allow anyone to work for Yuva Trinamool. Miscreants attack them (those keen to join Yuva Trinamool) with bombs and bullets. Yesterday’s incident was no exception. Anti-social Raja Gazi (Mantu’s son) led the attack. We have lodged a complaint with police,” Laskar said.

Raja said: “It’s a baseless allegation. They are the ones who intimidated locals in the market.” A Baruipur police team has reached the area.
