2 turncoats return to Trinamool after detours

Kharagpur/Behrampore: Two politicians, one from Kharagpur and the other from Behrampore , have returned to Trinamool Congress as the race hots up for the 2021 assembly polls.

Hema Choubey from Kharagpur and Humayun Kabir from Behrampore are known as turncoats in Bengal politics.

Choubey took the Trinamool flag from party district president Ajit Maity on Wednesday after dumping Congress, with which she had been associated since 2009.

She was an AICC member.

Before that, Choubey was with Trinamool, which she joined, inspired by Mamata Banerjee, in 2001 after her husband was killed that year. In 2009, Choubey joined Congress and was jote candidate (Congress-TMC) in the 2011 assembly polls from Garbeta.

“Trinamool’s Kharagpur MLA Pradip Sarkar also wanted me to come back. Congress doesn’t have leaders left in Kharagpur after Chacha’s (Gyan Singh Sohanpal) death,” Choubey said in Malancha on Wednesday.

Kabir, a former minister in the Trinamool government, too has made a comeback after a detour of Congress and BJP. He fought the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Murshidabad on a BJP ticket.

Soon after the comeback, Kabir protested against a section of Trinamool leaders in Murshidabad. “From now, no police officer, district magistrate or superintendent of police will run Trinamool. Many changes will come within the next few days and by August 19, all those dictator leaders will lose their power,” he said at an event on Wednesday.
