20 children injured in Jalaun school bus-truck collision

Jhansi: A speeding truck collided head-on with a school bus on Orai-Jalaun road on Saturday afternoon, leaving at least 20 students injured, some of them grievously.

All the victims were rushed to the nearest community health centre, where some were administered first aid. Others who had head wounds and fractures were referred to the Jalaun district hospital.

According to police, the bus of Jaipuria School was ferrying around 50 students home to Jalaun from the Orai campus when it met with the accident.

Eyewitnesses said the school bus overturned on impact. DM Mannan Akthar, along with senior police officers, inspected the site.

Jalaun circle officer Subodh Gautam conceded that the truck driver abandoned his vehicle and escaped before police reached the spot.

“Our priority is to ensure that the schoolchildren, some of whom have sustained serious injuries, get proper treatment. We have nevertheless sounded an alert and the truck driver will be tracked down,” the circle officer said.
