3 hero stones discovered on Karur-Tirupur border

TIRUPUR: A team of archaeological enthusiasts has discovered three hero stones which could have been sculptured to honour warriors, at K Paramathi in Karur- Tirupur border.

After receiving information about the stones, a team from Veerarajendran archaeological and historical research centre conducted a study on them.

The team believes the stones could be nine centuries old. The team was led by centre’s director S Ravikumar and comprises C M Rameshkumar, K Ponnusamy and S Sadhasivam.

“In Munnur near K Paramathi in Aravakurichi taluk, we found the three hero stones on Kattumunnur-Noyyal Road. The stones were found in two different private farmlands. In one of the stones, hero is seen in standing posture holding a sword in his right hand and a bow and arrow in left hand as though he was ready for battle. He wears anklets in both his hands and legs,” Ravikumar said.

“Two other hero stones were seen together. In one, hero is seen sitting on a horse. In his left hand, he holds rope which controls the speed of the horse while in right hand, he holds a spear. The hero’s tuft hair is bestowed to his left,” he said.

“It was rare that the hero stones were discovered with heroes in horse riding poses,” he added.

“The third hero stone showed the hero in a standing posture. The hero holds a small sword in his right hand whereas in his left hand, he has the bow and arrow. He wears ‘Makarakkuzhai’ in his ears and ‘Kandikai’ in chest,” he said.

“The hero is seen wearing leather shoes called ‘Thoduthol’ in the ancient period. The hero could be seen in a majestic posture as his long hairs were waving in the air, and the sculptor might have had been wanted to depict that the hero was heading to war,” he said.
