3 of family die after milk van hits bike

Ghaziabad: Three persons of a family were killed after the motorcycle they were travelling on was hit by a milk van on Hapur road at Ghaziabad’s Bhojpur, the police said on Saturday.

The victims, Priya (26), Mintu (30) and Kaila Devi (58), were heading towards their relative’s house in Modinagar from Hapur when the accident took place.

Cops said some passersby informed them following which the victims were taken to a government hospital in Modinagar where the doctors declared the women dead. Next, Mintu was sent to Meerut hospital where he died during treatment.

The SHO of Bhojpur police station Rajeev Kumar Singh told TOI that the accident took place at 8.30am on Saturday. “The police are trying to trace the vehicle and also checking the footage from CCTV cameras installed in nearby areas,” the police officer said.

Sambhu Kumar, a cousin of the victims, said: “Mintu had tried to start the car but due to some reason the vehicle refused to function after which he took them on a bike.”

"Priya's marriage took place six months ago with an engineer in Allahabad. She came to her father's place to celebrate Holi but was stuck here due to the lockdown in place," he added.

An FIR has been lodged under Section of 279 (rash driving), 304A (death due to negligence) and 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of IPC.

Investigation is under way, the police added.
