3 students killed in Vijayawada-Hyderabad highway accident

Hyderabad: Three engineering students died and five others were injured when the car they were travelling in overturned on the Vijayawada-Hyderabad highway after ramming into a truck on Monday night.

The deceased have been identified as Revanth, Harsha and Shashank. The injured were Prashant, Nikhil, Asif, Ajay and Eswar — all BTech third year students of Guru Nanak Engineering College in Ibrahimpatnam, Munagala SI Satyanarayana said.

Police said Revanth was at the wheel. Police are yet to confirm if he was inebriated at the time of the accident .

According to police, 15 students of the college, including the victims, had gone to Guntur and Bapatla to attend a wedding. The students were returning in two cars when the mishap occurred.

When the cars reached Indira Nagar in Munagala town at 8.20 pm, Maruti Ertiga, driven by Revanth and in which the eight students were travelling, rammed into the truck from behind while attempting to overtake it. After hitting the truck, the car spiralled out of control and overturned before hitting the median, the SI said.

While Harsha and Revanth died on the spot, Shashank succumbed to injuries at a hospital in Kodad. “The condition of the injured is out of danger. They were shifted to Yashoda Hospital in Malakpet,” the SI said.

A case under sections 304-A and 337 of the IPC was registered.
