300-Year-Old Antique Coins From Ahom Dynasty Found In Assam While Digging Up A Pond

The locals in Charaideo district of Assam discovered a large number of antique coins on Saturday. The coins are believed to be from the 300-year-old Ahom dynasty.

“The antiques were dug out during the excavation of the pond by the job card holders of Naharpukhuri Panchayat, which is one of the beneficiaries of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA),” the deputy commissioner of Charaideo, Dipak Kumar Hendique told

However, the administration could only recover 16 coins, “Most of the coins were already taken away by the workers and there were barely 16 coins left for the administration,” the deputy commissioner said.

The reports also say that an urn full of coins from Ahom and Mughal period were also discovered and the collected coins have been sent to the archaeological department of examination. The Ahom dynasty which ruled the Ahom Kingdom comprising main Assam ruled the region for roughly 600 years (1228-1826). The dynasty was founded by Sukaphaa, a Shan prince of Mo Mao who came to the region crossing the Patkai mountains.

The rule of legendary Ahom dynasty came to an end after the Burmese invasion and its annexation by the British later in 1826 followed the treaty of Yandabo. The Ahom dynasty (1228–1826) ruled the Ahom kingdom in Assam for nearly 600 years. The dynasty was established by Sukaphaa, a Shan prince of Mong Mao who came to Assam after crossing the Patkai mountains. The dynasty’s rule ended with the Burmese invasion of Assam and the subsequent annexation by the British East India Company following the Treaty of Yandabo in 1826.
