371 new cases, UP tally crosses 9,000

LUCKNOW: After a drop in cases, Covid-19 cases rose in the state again within 24 hours on Thursday. A total 371 new cases were reported across districts, pushing the state tally above the 9,000-mark. The state also recorded 185 discharges, taking the total number of recovered to 5,439.

As many as 15 corona deaths were also recorded, taking the state toll to 245.

According to health officials, three deaths each were reported in Firozabad and Meerut, two deaths each in Bulandshahr, Ghaziabad and Agra, and one death each in Balrampur , Pratapgarh and Azamgarh.

The new cases took the state's total to 9,302 with Gautam Budh Nagar recording the day's highest count of 31. It was followed by Kanpur and Baghpat where 29 and 18 cases, respectively, were reported. Cases continued to pour in east UP districts with Varanasi and Jaunpur recording 13 and 14 cases, respectively. Moving towards Gorakhpur, 13 cases were reported in Deoria while 11 were found in Sant Kabir Nagar. Ayodhya and Hardoi also recorded 11 new cases each.

Principal secretary, medical and health, Amit Mohan Prasad, said there were 3,553 active cases of coronavirus infection in UP while 5,439 patients have recovered.

He said the coronavirus infection rate in people with co-morbidity was 83% while the death rate among 60-plus was 32.6%. "That's why we insist on taking extra precautions for those with co-morbid conditions and the elderly," he said.

Prasad said people in the 51-60 age group also need to take care of themselves. "The rate of infection in this age group is 8.8%, while the death rate is 31.5%," he added.

He claimed that monitoring of migrants who have returned home is being done actively by village and ward surveillance committees.
