45% of 780 complaints sent via ECI app cVigil rejected in Maharashtra

PUNE: Missing names in voters’ list, selfies and civic issues comprised 45% of the complaints registered via the Election Commission’s cellphone app ‘cVigil’ from March 10, which were rejected by the poll officials.

The cellphone application allows citizens to register complaints about election code of conduct violations in their areas.

However, of the total 780 complaints, including 126 from Pune district, received, 370 were rejected as they did not concern the poll code of conduct violations.

“After rejection of 370 invalid complaints, 410 have been taken forward,” an EC official said, adding that of these, 112 were received from Pune, 61 from Thane, 44 from Solapur, 40 from Mumbai suburban, 39 from Mumbai city 26 from and Nagpur. “Most of them pertained to banners put up without permission,” the official said.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) had launched cVigil in July last year. “The district controller can reject a cVigil complaint without further recourse if it is found to be unrelated to poll code violations,” the official said.

The model code of conduct for next month’s Lok Sabha elections came into effect on March 10. “The 370 rejected complaints included selfies or those about missing names in voters’ list. The remaining, 410, were regarding Model Code of Conduct violations, which were addressed by the district collectorates,’’ the official added.

“We have not got any complaints regarding comments/speeches inciting violence as hardly any public rallies have been held in the state,” he said.

Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra will be held in four phases on April 11, 18, 23 and 29 and the results will be declared on May 23.
