55-year-old woman trampled to death by elephant in Chhattisgarh

Korba: A 55-year-old woman was killed by a wild elephant in Chhattisgarh's Surajpur district, a forest official said on Tuesday.
The victim Kiuli Bai was returning home after working in a paddy field on Monday evening when she was attacked by a tusker near Jhinga village under Pratappur forest range, divisional forest officer (Surajpur division) J R Bhagat said.

Surajpur is located around 174 km away from here.
While other women who were accompanying her managed to escape, the pachyderm caught hold of the victim with its trunk and slammed her on the ground, killing her on the spot, he said.
Forest and police personnel rushed to the scene and the body was sent for post-mortem, he said.
The deceased woman's kin were provided an instant relief of Rs 25,000, while the remaining compensation of Rs 5.75 lakh will be released after necessary formalities, the official said.
Villagers have been warned about a herd of 13 elephants that has been roaming in the area since the last couple of days, he added.
Several incidents of human-elephant conflict have been reported in the past from northern Chhattisgarh, comprising Surguja, Surajpur, Korba, Raigarh, Jashpur, Balrampur and Koriya districts.
