6 held for robbing train passengers

Kanpur: On the run after robbing passengers aboard a train on Thursday, six members of a gang of robbers were arrested during a surprise inspection near Samho railway station in Etawah late Friday night.

Government Railway Police (GRP) said the accused — Shafeeq, Nafees, Rizwan, Ayyub, Ashish and Kanhaiyya — were residents of Auraiya district.

Police said the six were involved in robbing passengers on the Jharkahnd Swarn Jayanti train late Thursday night.

Police also recovered Rs 9,200 cash, five mobile phones and a four-wheeler from the accused.

In charge of GRP station in Etawah, Shiv Kumar Singh, said, “We had received a tip-off that the gang was spotted in the area. A police team started checking platforms of various railway stations across the region on Friday night. We nabbed the six, while they were planning to rob passengers halting at Samho Railway station.”

Police said the Shafeeq was the gang’s kingpin.

“The accused told us that they took adavntage of the increased rush in trains during the festive season. The accused targeted people during late night. They will be produce in court and we will seek their custody for further investigation,” Singh said. A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been been registered against the accused.
