6 hurt as water tank collapses in Alwar

Alwar: A newly constructed overhead water tank collapsed on Tuesday in Bhiwadi area of Alwar district, injuring six persons by flooding the nearby areas. The 50-feet high tank was recently completed in January and was going through a trial phase.

The tank came crumbling down flooding the local court premises and an adjoining shop.

The police told TOI that six people were buried under after a portion of the court building crashed. According to an official, “Six injured persons were rescued from debris and taken to the nearby hospital. Three people are currently undergoing treatment in Bhiwadi while the other three were referred to Alwar district hospital for further treatment,” he said.

The local administration and the police called a JCB machine to remove the debris. By the time first response team arrived, the water had gone into the houses and shops. The sources informed TOI that the court was in progress when they tank came falling down. “The court was packed with people when the incident happened. Tank had fallen down on the court building due to which a small portion of it collapsed,” added another official.

As per the primary investigation, the tank was capable of storing 4 lakh litres of drinking water and was brimming with it. The officials said that because the tank was full to the capacity, it’s support structure like pillars could not sustain the pressure and fell down. The condition of three of the injured remains critical as they have sustained severe injuries. District collector said that an FIR will be registered against the erring engineers. The district administration has also sought a detailed report from the PHED.
