70-kg plastic bags seized in Barnala

Under “Mission Tandarust Punjab”, the raids have been carried out in Barnala city and around 70 kg of banned plastic bags were seized from multiple shops. The joint teams of the Department of Local Bodies and the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) raided several shops, on Wednesday, to monitor the efficacy of ban on plastic carry bags.EO MC Barnala Mr.

Parvinder Singh Bhatti said that around 70 kg plastic carry bags were confiscated during the raids today and major seizure was from a garments shop. He added, “Earlier, we have given time to the wholesalers and shopkeepers to dispose off the banned plastic bags. Now, we will conduct raids on daily basis in the city and would initiate course of action against the violators as per law.EO also appealed the city residents to avoid the use of plastic bags and said that they should use jute or starch bags for their routine market purposes.SDO PPCB Aushpreet Singh said that the challans have also been issued to the violators.
He added that under the provisions of the Punjab Plastic Carry Bags (Manufacture, Usage and Disposal) Control Act, 2005, the state government had completely prohibited manufacturing, stocking, distribution, recycling, sale and use of plastic carry bags.
