75 buffaloes rescued from Shahpur

The police raided an illegal slaughterhouse in Shahpur and rescued as many as 75 buffaloes from the spot on Saturday. The cops arrested 12 people and also seized about 1,500 kg of meat from Qureshi Chowk behind Jani Seth ni Haveli.

A team of Shahpur police was on vehicle-checking duty at 'Trankhuniya Bagicha' on Saturday when a man on a motorcycle tried to dodge them and zoomed towards the lane of Rani Roopmati Mosque.

Sensing something suspicious, the police gave chase.

When they crossed Rani Roopmati mosque, they found several buffalos in pickup trucks. The cops confronted the four men -- Usmangani Qureshi, Rafiq Qureshi, Ghosh Qureshi and Mohammad Qureshi -- present with the four trucks. When the cops asked for pass permits needed to transport cattle, they could not produce any. On questioning, they told the cops that more buffalos had been taken by few other men to Qureshi Chowk. The cops reached there and spotted more buffaloes along with three that had been slaughtered.

PI R K Amin of Shahpur police said, "There were 75 buffaloes worth Rs 5.82 lakh and meat worth Rs 1.50 lakh. The accused have been booked under various sections of animal protection acts as well as the IPC. They have been sent for corona test and reports are awaited."
