76-year-old tests Covid positive after death in Manipur

IMPHAL: A 76-year-old man, who died at a the Catholic Medical Centre (CMC) in Imphal , tested positive for the novel coronavirus after his death, taking the state’s toll to six.

A resident of Chakpikarong in Chandel district , the victim was suffering from diabetes and hepatitis and was admitted to the hospital on Thursday afternoon, sources said.

He breathed his last on the same night at around 10. His samples were collected on Friday and his results, which turned out positive, came back in the evening.

Following his death, all employees of the hospital will be undergoing Covid-19 tests soon, the sources added.

Meanwhile, a ministerial team led by chief minister N Biren Singh on Saturday inspected the preparations for opening of a new Covid care centre at Manipur Trade and Expo Centre at the Lamboi khongnangkhong area in Imphal West . The centre, which will initially have 300 beds, is almost ready for inauguration, a statement issued by the CM’s secretariat read. Biren, however, instructed the officials concerned to upgrade it to a 1,000-bed centre as it has enough space for expansion.
