9 Months After Sex Photo Scandal, BBC's Top News Anchor Resigns

London: Nine months after renowned news anchor Huw Edwards hit the headlines over sexually explicit images involving a teenager, he resigned from his post from BBC on Monday, citing “medical advice.” Edwards was suspended last year, in July 2023, when the alleged sex photos first surfaced.

He had worked as BBC’s lead presenter in various significant events, including the death and funeral of Queen Elizabeth 11.

In a statement by BBC, the media house stated, “Huw Edwards has today resigned and left the BBC.”

After working for 40 years with the broadcasting company, Huw stated that his decision to step down was based on the medical advice from his doctors. The media house has accepted his resignation, believing it would allow all parties to move forward, it said in a statement. “We don’t believe it appropriate to comment further.”

Earlier this year, the BBC issued an apology to the family of the man, who alleged that Edward had paid him for the sexually explicit images when he was a teenager. In July last year, when the allegations hit the front page of every news outlet, Edwards's wife Vicky Flind said that he was “suffering from serious mental health issues,” and had been hospitalised.

As per the report commissioned by the broadcaster, two months after the victim’s family complained to the BBC about the father of five in May 2023, the Sun Tabloid was ready to publish the man’s story with the detailed allegations, it is when the senior leaders were informed about the issue.

Edwards's family denied any such incident, citing that the man, when was a teenager worked with Anchor and had used the money given by him to fuel a crack cocaine addiction. The man, however, denied those claims, calling them baseless and “rubbish.” The 62-year-old Edward never commented on the issue publicly.

According to the AFP report, the cops stated that they did not find any evidence verifying the criminal offence had been committed.

When the scandal broke last year, it took over British newspapers and news bulletins. Although public trust has been the foundation of the BBC's public brand, the broadcaster has recently been rocked by scandals that have exposed some well-known figures as serial sex offenders.
