A face recognition app for city stray dogs

The animal husbandry unit of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is working on a face-recognition app that could potentially solve the issue of stray dogs that relocate to other areas. “We have received many complaints from citizens regarding dogs that move about to different areas in the city making it difficult to keep track of them.

Many of the dogs are sterilised, but since they move to newer areas, it causes confusion. Hence, the app is developed to curb this issue,” says Animal Husbandry Cell Deputy Director Shashikumar S.
The BBMP has the required logistics, and the app is only managed by the information technology department. It will be available only to the zonal officers and animal birth control staffers (ABC).
How does the app work
Before the dog is neutered, the image of the dog along with its respective zone details are recorded. Once the dog is taken to the centre for the operation, details are cross-checked and is returned to the areas it belongs to after three days, along with a GPS tag within a 100-metre radius. This makes it easier to track the dog. In case the dog wanders off to another area, the app allows the
official to trace it back.
PETA gives a thumbs up
Nikunj Sharma – Associate Director of Policy at PETA – says, “Sterilisation is the only scientific method for reducing the stray dog population, and it is commendable that BBMP is taking its responsibility to sterilise dogs seriously – including the use of high-end technology. This app may also help relocate dogs back to their territory, if they are lost, thereby reducing fights between dogs. Sterilising one female dog can prevent 67,000 births in six years. Sterilised animals are also less likely to roam around or bite, as they would not have puppies to protect or be fighting each other for mates.”
