Abandoned in the middle of a lake, Sabarkantha police rescue five siblings

Cops play Good Samaritans

Sabarkantha police took the children aged 3 to 7 years under their care; they were abandoned in the middle of a lake at Vadali village by their maternal uncle after the kids' father died and mother eloped with another man

Five children of a family who were abandoned by their relatives have been rescued by the Sabarkantha police who are taking good care of them and have decided on getting them the best of government-funded education.

The five siblings, the youngest of who is just three-and-a-half years old, were abandoned by their maternal uncle under a tree in the middle of a lake in Vadali village, which was in spate after the recent bout of rains that lashed the state.

Police patrolling through Vadali village earlier this week noticed a child crying under a tree near the lake. On inquiring further, they found four more children between ages 3 and 7 years sobbing in the rain, completely drenched.

The cops took the children to Vadali police station, where they were given a haircut, bathed and fed.

Sabarkantha Superintendent of Police (SP) Chaitanya R Mandlik has taken it upon himself to make sure that the children are well taken care of and are given a proper education.

Upon investigation into the children's history, the cops found that the children's father had recently died, after which their mother had married another person.

Left in the care of their maternal uncle, the kids suffered as he too abandoned them in the heavy rain.

The police team found that the children were residents of Poshina village and inquiring with panchayat officials, found that their father had died. Their maternal uncle was homeless and police believe that was the reason he had abandoned them.

A police official told Mirror, "The children were left standing on a small piece of dry land under a tree in the middle of a lake. Thankfully, our patrolling team saw them and decided to investigate, otherwise we dread to think what would have happened to them."

The children have been sent to the Child Care Institution (CCI) in Sabarkantha. Speaking of the road ahead for them, SP Mandlik said, "We are in constant touch with the child protection society to ensure good care is taken of the siblings who have been abandoned at such a young age. We have also spoken to the education department to make sure they get a good education."
