Abducted 'kuruvi' rescued in Cuddalore after dad's complaint

Chennai: Police have solved the abduction case of a 26-year-old man, who was kidnapped for a ransom of Rs 10lakh, by apprehending at least five suspects who abducted the man as he left the airport on November 14. The victim, identified as Thanigaivel, had come from Singapore .

Inquiries revealed that Thanigaivel acted as a ‘courier’ to smuggle gold from Singapore and the kidnappers alleged he had cheated them soon after he landed by not handing over the smuggled consignment.

The issue came to light after Thanigaivel’s father Kaliyamurthy received a ransom call and the alleged abductor demanded Rs 10lakh for releasing his son. A police team tracked the suspects and rescued Thanigaivel from a hideout in Cuddalore. Thanigaivel of Cuddalore was employed in a firm in Singapore. On Wednesday night, he had told his father that he boarded a flight Chennai and would reach Cuddalore the next day.

Police said Kaliyamurthy tried to reach his son on his mobile on Thursday morning but found it switched off. Hours later, he got a call and a man said he had kidnapped Thanigavel as he had stolen 30 sovereigns of jewellery he was supposed to hand over to his friend in Chennai. Kaliyamurthy lodged a complaint with the Cuddalore police and they sent it to the Chennai airport police station.

Meanwhile, police asked Kaliyamurthy to speak to the abductors and he promised to pay them the ransom. They asked him to put the bag with the cash in a bin near Cuddalore. Kaliyamurthy followed the instructions and police nabbed them.
