Aborted landslide occurs in Idukki

Idukki: Experts have confirmed another ‘aborted landslide’ (slopes on the verge of collapse) at Vikas Nagar near Vandiperiyar in Idukki . The landslide was reported on Saturday. Nearly 12 families living in the downhill were shifted to safety by Sunday evening.

“The earth had caved in. Chances are high for more landslides to occur in the region,” said district geologist Ajayakumar.

“Blockage of natural streams led to aborted landslides. I have submitted a report to district collector regarding this,” he said.

“This monsoon season, Idukki had witnessed 32 landslides. Soil piping was also reported from some regions. Nearly 100 families live in the downhill area of Vikas Nagar,” said Ajayakumar.

“The 12 families have been shifted to their relatives’ houses. If needed, we will open relief camps for the families in the region,” said Peermade tahsildar M K Shaji.

Last week, an aborted landslide was reported at Periyakanal near Rajakkad in Idukki and nearly 60 families were shifted from the region.
