Abuses are gifts, says 'baghi' Modi in Ballia

BALLIA: Harping on ‘garibi (poverty)’ and ‘jati (caste)’ to attack the opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday made an endeavour to project himself as the saviour of Ballia who’s facing a smear campaign for his legitimate fight.

Addressing a rally at Haibatpur, Modi lauded Ballia as baghi (revolutionary) for standing up against slavery.

“Ballia jis tarah ghulami ke khilaf baghi bana, Modi bhi garibi ke khilaf baghi hua (The way Ballia fought slavery, Modi is fighting poverty),” he said.

Stressing that “garib” was his one and only caste, the PM recalled the launch of the Ujjwala Yojana in Ballia in May 2016 and said his government’s flagship pro-poor scheme benefited seven crore underprivileged families.

In a repeat jibe at the SP-BSP alliance, Modi said the “mahamilawati (super adulterated) people” had only one job these days and that was to abuse the PM. “But, I take them as gifts... Iska jawab Modi nahin, janata dene wali hai (People will answer on my behalf),” he said, adding that it was true he hailed from a backward caste, but his goal was to make India “agada (forward)”.

“I have lived through poverty... I have seen my mother struggle with oven smoke... I have see how women suffer for want of toilets... And, I have also seen people selling their land for medical treatment... These things prompted me to fight against poverty,” the PM said to big applause.

Stepping up the heat on the opposition, Modi accused them of benefiting from caste politics to amass power and pelf. He said the opposition was abusing him because government agencies were looking into dubious accounts.

“Main aj inko khuli chunauti deta hoon ki gali-galauj ke bajaye woh dikha de maine koi benami company dali hai... ya mere pas bungalow, farmhouse, shopping mall, videshi bank mein paisa ya mehngi gadiya hain (I openly challenge them to prove I have dubious companies, bungalow, farmhouse, shopping mall, money in foreign bank or luxury vehicles),” Modi said.

The PM also reiterated how India under him had taken on the scourge of terrorism. “I have given the forces a free hand to crush terrorism , which resulted in the surgical and air strikes... Pakistan and its terrorists are scared of India now...” He also highlighted schemes and projects of his government, and sought support to form a strong government at the Centre.
