Accused committed crime 8 days after arriving in state

Alappuzha: Bangladeshi nationals Labilu (33) and Juval (21), accused in Venmony elderly couple murder case said on Friday told the investigation team that the couple fell unconscious in a single blow using iron weapons so that they did not create any noise at the time of murder.

“On Friday and Saturday (November 8 and 9), we went to the couple’s home for work.

We became good friends with them and they promised to arrange their store room for our stay. We understood that the elderly couple were financially sound and have gold and cash. So, around 3pm on Monday, we reached their house and the elderly man took us to their store room to show. When we entered inside the store room, we took an iron rod and hit him on his head. In our single attack, he fell on the ground and became unconscious. After ensuring his death, we searched for the elderly woman and she was inside the kitchen. Then we took a spade outside the house and attacked her. She also became unconscious and her face was smashed with the spade. After that we escaped with gold and cash,” the accused said.

The team questioned the accused with the help of a man, who knew Bengali and Malayalam. The accused told the police that they came to Venmony after a Bangladeshi friend told them about the place and committed the crime after around eight days after they arrived.

The special investigation team on Friday afternoon took the accused for evidence gathering at the murder spot. Local people and relatives gathered there tried to attack the accused and it created tension there. However, the police blocked the people and shifted them into the vehicle and left the spot.

Speaking at a press conference here on Friday, Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, DIG (Ernakulam Range), said that the Bangladeshi passports had been taken from the accused.

Alappuzha police chief K M Tomi said that they had tourist visa and their arrival to India was in a proper way. “But they did not have the permission for engaging in work here,” the SP said.

The police recovered over 45 sovereigns of gold and Rs 17,000 from them. The police believe that those were stolen from the couple’s home. The police said that Labilu is married and a father of two children. Juval is a bachelor.

After committing the murder, they left for Chennai from Chengannur Railway station. From there, they boarded the Coromandel Express, which runs from Chennai Central to Howrah Junction.
