After CCTV network, Rampura police colony develops own wi-fi network

Surat: In an attempt to make it a model police line , residents of Rampura police line have developed a wi-fi network providing 24 hours free internet to all residents of the area. In the initial stage, one of the four towers has been covered under wi-fi network and soon other buildings too will get the facility. The residents have collected funds and installed the facility which is connected to their existing CCTV camera network.

Now, the residents can keep watch in and around the building from their mobile phones even from far away.

Residents of the 10-storey B4 tower now has unlimited access to internet through the eight wi-fi routers installed in the building. Earlier the residents had developed CCTV camera network in the colony to ensure safety following repeated incidents of petrol and shoe thefts. After the CCTVs are installed the thefts have come under control and to make it further effective the residents planned to develop wi-fi network.

“To improve internet connectivity we decided to install wi-fi network. This is cheaper and has better connectivity,” said a resident, adding that installation cost them Rs 25,000 and the 40 families will get unlimited internet for two years. Altogether 160 families live in the four towers and all are up to the rank of head constables.

“The best advantage of the wi-fi connectivity is we can see live footage of CCTV cameras on our mobile phones while we are away. This helps us not only ensure security but also keep an eye on our children too,” said another resident.

In the past, the residents installed CCTV network in the police line themselves by collecting donation from the residents. Later, when the city police officials knew about the initiative, they made it a police department project and started providing financial assistance.
