After much delay, monsoon withdraws

Panaji: The southwest monsoon has withdrawn from the rest of the country from its position near Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, on the west coast downwards on Wednesday, though post-monsoon rain continued in parts of Goa.

Parts of Goa witnessed brisk rainfall accompanied by thunder after the sky got overcast late afternoon.

“The monsoon has withdrawn over the country while the northeast monsoon rains have started over Tamil Nadu and adjoining areas,” Krishnamurty Padgalwar, director of India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji, said. The monsoon season ended on September 1 with a 155-inch rainfall and a surplus of 33%.

Although its withdrawal was expected to be on October 1, it was delayed. The quota of August rainfall of 702.3mm was achieved within a fortnight and 305mm of September within a week. The cycle usually starts with the withdrawal from northwest India on September 1. But for the first time in almost six decades, the phenomenon commenced only on October 9.

The post-monsoon rainfall has touched 88.3mm, while 106.5mm is considered normal at this stage. But light to moderate rainfall, triggered by local systems with a combination of heating during the day and incursion of moisture by afternoon, will continue for a few more days.

The rain will be accompanied by thunder and lightning. During the last 24 hours, Sanguem received the heaviest rainfall of 62.6mm, Canacona 42.6mm, Quepem 40mm, Margao 31.1mm.
