After wall collapse killed two kids, tribals raze six toilets in Shivpuri

Bhopal: A couple of days after two tribal kids died as the wall of a toilet built for the tribal people under the Maryada Abhiyaan, launched in 2012 by the state government, collapsed, local tribals razed down the toilets that were built during that time in their ‘basti’ (settlement).

Sources said about half a dozen toilets were built under the project in the tribal basti of the Rathakheda village.

After the wall collapse, enraged tribals razed them down alleging poor construction quality and fearing another accident.

Apart from few of the toilets that were built under Maryada Abhiyan years ago, there are around 75 other toilets in the village, which are still intact, said sources.

Local MLA Suresh Dhakad, who hails from Rathakheda village said, “The kids who died were like my own kids. We hail from the same village. The toilets were built but government could not arrange for water making them unfit for use. Villagers stored wood and other things in these toilets which over the time became dilapidated. On the fateful day the wall collapsed as a monkey jumped on it while children were playing beneath it.”

“I am in Bhopal so I am not aware whether few more of those toilets have been razed or not,” he said. On Nov 11, the wall of one of the toilets collapsed when children were playing beside it, killing two on the spot. District administration has already ordered a detailed probe into the matter. “We are yet to receive the report of the probe team. Things will be clear once we get the report,” district panchayat CEO, HP Verma told TOI.
