Agra: Jugaad rickshaws to go off road soon

Agra: The traffic police will soon be launching a campaign against unregistered rickshaws operating in the city. However, before the campaign is launched, an awareness drive will be conducted for the jugaad rickshaw owners that operating unregistered vehicle is an offence.

Around 2,000 jugaad rickshaws are operating in the district.

These are used to transport not just goods but passengers too. Neither the regional transport department nor the Agra municipal corporation (AMC) has any record of these rickshaws.

According to a regional transport department, in case a jugaad rickshaw faces an accident, the owner would not be able to claim insurance owing to no registration.

In a recent road safety meeting, divisional commissioner Anil Kumar had ordered ban on motor-fitted rickshaws. Following this, traffic police started planning action against the unregistered rickshaws.

Superintendent of police (traffic) Prashant Kumar said, “Soon a campaign will be launched to stop operations of the unregistered rickshaws. Before that, meetings will be conducted with leaders of the rickshaw association to inform them about illegal operation of motor-operated rickshaws. In the first phase, action will be taken in the city areas. Rural areas will be covered in the second phase.”
