Agra man cleaning rifle killed as weapon accidentally goes off

AGRA: Hours after model code of conduct came into effect, a man preparing to surrender his licenced rifle in the district armoury was killed after his loaded weapon misfired and he was hit on the chest.

Identified as Sanjeev Kumar , 40, the victim was a resident of Nagla Bhau of Dakshin police jurisdiction, Firozabad district .

Police said that he was an authorised dealer of public distribution system .

Speaking to TOI, SHO Sunil Kumar said, “The incident took place around 7.30 am at the victim’s residence. He was cleaning his rifle to surrender it to the armoury. He died on the spot and the body has been sent for autopsy. We have also seized his rifle.”

Police sources said that there are around 50,000 arms license holders in eight district of Agra zone. Police said, “Most of the weapons owned by license holders are for show. In fact, due to the large number of licensed weapon holders, celebratory firing has become a menace in the state.”
