Ahmedabad: In 10 days, mosquitoes breed 1,596 citizen pleas

AHMEDABAD: The growing menace of the Aedes aegypti mosquito and the rising number of dengue cases in the city have made citizens flood the municipal body with requests to control the vector. In the first 10 days of this month, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation received 1,596 requests for fogging and other anti-vector measures.

Last month, 5,946 complaints were received — clearly indicating that anti-vector initiatives have been inadequate.

“The Aedes aegypti mosquito is responsible for spreading dengue, chikungunya, and zika infections. The rise in mosquito numbers is a concern for us,” said Shital Parmar, a homemaker from Anandnagar. “Pregnant women are especially vulnerable. There have been no campaigns to spread awareness about zika though the neighbouring Rajasthan and MP suffered an epidemic last year.”

Parmar had recently lodged a complaint with the AMC about a large pool of rainwater near Scarlet Heights apartments along the stretch that connects Anandnagar to Vejalpur Road.

This month, the maximum requests for vector-control measures, 548, have come from the west zone — from areas such as Navrangpura, Paldi, Chandkheda-Motera, and Stadium. Last month, 2,231 requests were filed for vector-control measures from these areas.

In September, the posh southwest and northwest zones had sent 686 and 766 requests. In the first 10 days of October, 186 complaints were received from the northwest zone and 202 from the southwest zone.
