Ahmedabad: Woman arrested for abducting friend's baby

AHMEDABAD: Vatva police on Sunday rescued a one-year-old girl from a 53-year-old kidnapper, Puja Purani, from Utarda village of Bharatpur in Rajasthan . Inspector H V Sisara of the Vatva police station said that Purani was too old to give birth to a child but she wanted to prove to her second husband that she could. So she abducted the child of her friend.

“We have arrested Pooja and have given the child to her parents, who had lost hope,” Sisara said. According to police sources, on October 17 a 35-year-old woman of Sadbhavnanagar lodged an FIR stating that her child had been abducted by her own friend.

“The difficulty for us was that the complainant did not even knew Pooja’s full name, nor did she know where she lived,” Sisara said. Under the instruction of JCP sector-2 Nipuna Torwane and DCP Bipin Aahire, Vatva police formed three teams to find Pooja. Police soon learnt that she was Pooja alias Bharti Kantilal Purani of Hadvad in Surendranagar.

“We then found out that Pooja’s sister and brother live in the city,” a police source said. “But they told us that as Pooja had married a man belonging to Madhya Pradesh, they had snapped ties with her and didn’t know where she lived.”

Police turned to Pooja’s friend Sabnambanu. During the questioning of Sabnambanu, it emerged that Pooja had left her first husband and had married Raju Vijaysinh Jat, 23, of Utarda. Police activated their sources in Bharatpur and learnt that Pooja had a small child with her. “We contacted local police inspector Ramkrishna Yadav and then personally went to the village and rescued the child,” Sisara said. “We have booked Pooja for kidnapping a minor girl.”
