AIADMK MP killed as SUV rams median

VILLUPURAM: AIADMK Lok Sabha member S Rajendran, 62, died in a road accident after his SUV rammed a road median near Tindivanam early on Saturday. The Villupuram MP is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.


The accident occurred at 6am when he was returning home after an overnight stay at the government bungalow at Jakkampettai in Tindivanam.

Rajendran had participated in a feast hosted by PMK founder S Ramadoss at his Thailapuram Garden house Friday for chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and deputy CM O Panneerselvam after the AIADMK and the PMK inked a pact for the Lok Sabha polls.

The MP left with his driver Arumaiselvam, 25, and a relative, Tamilselvam, 40. When the vehicle was on the Tindivanam-Mailam road, the driver failed to notice the median in dense fog and smashed into it, police said.

The MP and two others sustained severe injuries as the front portion of the vehicle was completely damaged in the impact. A highway patrol team and a team from the Tindivanam police station rescued the injured and rushed them to Tindivanam government hospital. However, Rajendran died on the way to the hospital.

Two others injured in the accident were referred to Mundiyampakkam government medical college and hospital for advanced treatment.

Chief minister K Palaniswami and deputy CM O Panneerselvam paid their respects to the MP’s body at the Tindivanam GH on Saturday. PMK leader S Ramadoss, too, condoled the death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Rajnath Singh also expressed condolences.
