Aligarh: 150 people flout lockdown rules, participate in procession to bury cow carcass; FIR filed

Aligarh: Around 150 people, on Friday, flouted the nationwide lockdown rules to participate in a procession to bury a cow carcass in a village in the city. While talking about the incident, Anil Samaniya, Circle Officer (CO) Civil Lines, Aligarh, said that an FIR has been registered in connection with the incident.

Lockdown flouted for bull's procession

This is, however, not the first time when such processions have been held and the lockdown rules have been disobeyed in the country. Last month, about 200 people in Tamil Nadu had defied the ongoing nationwide COVID-19 lockdown to come together for the funeral of a bull. An official had confirmed that the bull was well-known for his race-winning heroics and was worshipped by the people of the state.

While talking about the gathering, an official also said, "Initially only 30-50 people participated in the burial, and then later to pay their last respects around 100-200 assembled."

It was further said that the villagers had great regard for the animal and as a token of their love and respect, they had also brought garlands, towels and cash for his last journey. A resident who had witnessed the funeral also said that women were seen crying when they heard of the animal's demise and an atmosphere of sadness prevailed in the village.

India under lockdown

India, on May 18, began with the fourth phase of the nationwide lockdown. The Ministry of Home Affairs, on May 17, had announced an extension of the coronavirus-induced lockdown in the entire country till May 31.

The lockdown had initially been put in place for 21 days on March 24 - after which it was extended twice for two weeks before being extended for the third time on May 17.

MHA issues new guidelines

Soon after the Home Ministry announced the extension of lockdown, it also issued guidelines - relaxing several restrictions that were put in place in the initial phases of the nationwide coronavirus lockdown. The MHA also said that no more than 50 people for wedding functions and 20 people for funeral activities shall be allowed in lockdown 4.0.
