Aligarh ex-mayor challenges Owaisi to contest from city

AGRA: Former mayor of Aligarh, Shakuntala Bharti challenged All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi to contest from Aligarh if he is ready to face a ‘humiliating defeat’.

While addressing women on the occasion of BJP Vishal Sankalp Mahila Sameelan on Friday, Bharti said that she will show Oawasi his real worth if he contests from Aligarh.

She said Owaisi will not be allowed to enter any area of the city.

“Owasi had used abusive language against ‘Bharat Mata’. All the women from Aligarh will respond aggressively as he is trying to destroy India,” Bharti said. Questioning Owaisi’s plans on contesting Lok Sabha polls from Aligarh, Bharti said, “Is he planning to contest elections with the support of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students?”

BJP state vice-president of Mahila Morcha, Ranjana Upadhyaya said that Priyanka Gandhi will make no impact in the state. “She has been in the politics for the past several years but this time, she has been brought to the fore as Congress knows Rahul can not do much for it in UP,” she said.

She claimed that BJP is the only party which has given respect and security to women. She said, “Our defence minister, foreign minister and many other women are playing a major role in politics,” Upadhyaya said. Unlike BJP, other parties are focused on promoting ‘parivarvad’, she added.

On being asked about ticket distribution to women candidates, she said that BJP is the only party that gives equal space to women and tickets would be given to deserving women candidates.
