Along Ganga, 'beti' tries to build bridges with people

SINDHORA ( MIRZAPUR ): The white sand along the free flowing Ganga was getting colder with every passing minute against the lush green of the young wheat fluttering in mild breeze.

Congress party workers and supporters stood ankle-deep in the Ganga, waiting for their general secretary Priyanka Gandhi to arrive at Sindhora ghat in Mirzapur district on Tuesday evening.

On the remote ghat, Priyanka hoped to connect with the back of beyond, adding another chapter to her family’s political legacy.

As the glaring white lights atop Priyanka Gandhi’s steamer lit up the ghat that had gone pitch dark by late evening, a frenzy of enthusiastic workers ran to receive Priyanka, clad in a red sari. As they chanted her name, Priyanka waved back, moving towards the makeshift stage on the banks of the Ganga. A small set-up was awaiting her, a few cut-outs of Priyanka and her brother Rahul Gandhi had been lined up and several speeches had already been made before her arrival. Her own speech was short with attention from her audience after which she made her way forward to Chunar, her next and last spot for the day.

Earlier in the day, Priyanka continued with her temple run on the second day of her UP visit when she visited the Sita Samahit Sthal in Bhadohi and the Vindhyavasini temple in Vindhyachal , Mirzapur.

Inside, she was assisted by Purohit Sumit Pandey in the puja and given a red chunri. All this while, a dimpled smile spread across her face.

Her next halt from here was the 700-year-old Kantit Dargah Shareef, where Priyanka was again welcomed by a multitude chanting her name.

Once inside, the sari pallu on her head, Priyanka carried a basket of offerings to the shrine of Khwaja Ismail Chishti, the nephew of Ajmer’s Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. She put a chadar on the shrine and took three rounds of the mazaar.

On Priyanka’s exit from the dargah, her convoy was interrupted by a group of women from Kasratti area of Mirzapur. She asked her driver to stop and called the women to her side.

Extending a helping hand to them, Priyanka promised the group all support in the case of one Nirmala’s brother Shambhu Nishad who had met with an accident on March 8.
