Ambala DLSA grants Rs 5 lakh compensation to rape survivor

AMBALA: The Ambala district legal services authority ( DLSA ) has awarded Rs 5 lakh compensation to a rape survivor under the Haryana Victim Compensation Scheme (HVCS), 2013 on Friday.


The accused Rajinder, in this case, was held guilty under Section 6 (punishment for aggravated penetrative sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and he was sentenced 20 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 20,000 on January 7, 2019, by the court of Ambala additional sessions judge (ASJ) Yashwinder Paul Singh.



A case in this regard was registered on May 31, 2017, at Saha police station of Ambala district.

Following the verdict in the case, it was moved for exploring the possibilities of compensation to the survivor by the court of ASJ on January 10, 2019.

The parents of the survivor moved an application to the Ambala DLSA under Section 357 (order to pay compensation) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) on January 17, 2019.

Ambala DLSA chief judicial magistrate (CJM)-cum-secretary Danish Gupta said, “The statements of parents of the victim were recorded and the father is earning Rs 1.26 lakh per annum from all sources which is less than Rs 4.5 lakh conditional limit of the compensation scheme. The crime was also reported to the police on May 31, 2017, which is within 48 hours of its occurrence on May 30, 2017. Therefore, the case is fit for grant of compensation under the HVCS, 2013. In the interest of justice, an amount of Rs 5 lakh is awarded as compensation for the rehabilitation of the victim.”
