Ambala stationn rank falls to 89 from 46 in swacch survey

AMBALA: The Ambala Cantonment railway station of Ambala Division of Northern Railway (NR) has fallen in the overall ranking of 2019 swachh rail survey to 89th position among 720 stations selected for the third party cleanliness survey throughout the country by the Indian Railways .

In 2018, the city railway station ranked 46.

Ambala additional divisional railway manager (ADRM) Pankaj Gupta told TOI that due to the absence of water recycling plant and composters for biodegradable waste, the Ambala station has fallen down to 89th rank.

At the Northern Railway level, in the category of zonal ranking, Ambala Cantonment station has fallen from 13th to 14th place told the ADRM.

The railway officials said that nine stations of Ambala Division were selected for the swacch survey including Ambala Cantonment, Saharanpur, Kalka, Sirhind, Chandigarh, Rajpura, Patiala , Abohar, and Bathinda .

“The Ambala Cantonment and Chandigarh railway stations fall under ‘A1’ category and they are big stations and the water recycling plant and composting of biodegradable waste has become mandatory at these station premises. Both these stations do not have these systems, resulting in decline of ranking in the cleanliness survey” said Gupta.

The officials said the passengers are being educated through various awareness campaigns and street plays not to litter the station. They are also issued penalties. Around 125 sanitation workers are working at Ambala Cantonment station day and night for keeping the station premises clean, added the railway officials.
