Ambala: Villagers demand water drainage system at National Highway 67

AMBALA: The residents of several villages under ward number 6 of the Zila Parishad on Tuesday handed over a memorandum to Ambala deputy commissioner (DC) demanding the water drainage system under National Highway (NH) 67.

As per the information, the newly constructed Ambala-Kaithal NH-67 does not have any passage for natural water flow which has affected thousands of acres of agricultural lands after rainwater entered them following heavy rain in the last 48 hours.

Around 50 residents including women, children of Manakpur, Lohgarh, Dadiana, Dangdehri villages on Tuesday visited Ambala DC office to hand over the memorandum under the leadership of Gurwinder Singh , member Zila Parishad.

The demand stated, "Due to recent rain, water has entered our houses and damaged our crops. We have lost contact with the city and facing problems in traveling in and out of our villages. Earlier, the rainwater used to fell in Ghaggar River through the drainage along the GT Road but since the NH-67 was constructed, the drains of our villages have been blocked and they have taken the shape of lakes. The administration has made two cuts in the NH-67 for the water to pass away which are not enough."

"It is requested that two large passages be developed on the NH-67 through which the rain and flood water could be drained as per its natural flow. In 2017, all the panchayats of our villages had apprised the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) about this problem but nobody listened to us and later we also met the district administration but till now no relief has been provided”, further states the demand by the villagers.

Ambala DC Sharandeep Kaur Brar told TOI, “We have already written to the NHAI about this problem some time ago and the development will be done by them. The water in the district has been receding and the situation is normal.”
