Amphan spares Jharkhand, but set to bring rain to eastern areas for 2 days

Ranchi: Cyclone Amphan , which ravaged Odisha and southern West Bengal and, did not have much impact in the neighbouring Jharkhand, the Ranchi met office said on Thursday.

Ranchi IMD director S D Kotal said: “Cyclone Amphan did not have any effect in Jharkhand. The north and northeastern districts will get light to moderate showers at isolated places in the next two days.” In its long-range forecast for Jharkhand for the upcoming fortnight, IMD Ranchi said light to moderate showers between May 29 and June 4.

Hamlets in Kolhan division, where administrative officials evacuated people from their mud houses on Wednesday afternoon, also did not report any losses to life and property. However, strong winds flattened a few mud houses and uprooted trees in Rajmahal in Sahebganj along the border with West Bengal late on Wednesday evening.

Jamshedpur, a little over 120km away from Kolkata, recorded winds blowing at 46kmph while Ranchi recorded wind speeds up to 30kmph on Wednesday late evening. Jamtara, Pakur, Dumka and Sahenganj recorded wind speeds in between 20-30kmph.

Several parts of eastern Jharkhand recorded heavy rains. Rajmahal and Maheshpur received 60mm of overnight rain while Jamshedpur and Massanjore in Dumka recorded 50mm. Heavy rain was reported from Moharo, Putki, Koner and Chaibasa (30mm each). Deoghar, Bokaro, Tenughat and Godda received 20mm rain.

The rain was brought by Amphan and a cyclonic circulation which lies over Assam and its neighborhood. Jharkhand received 18.5 mm rain over the ongoing week. In a special bulletin, IMD Ranchi said the rain was 7.5mm more than the normal of 11.1 mm.

The magnitude of devastation caused by Amphan in Kolkata kept many families in Ranchi and Jamshedpur on tenterhooks. “With large swathes of Kolkata facing a blackout and telecommunication lines down, I have been unable not connect with my parents and wife in the city,” Kripa Shankar Poddar, a Jamshedpur-based professional, told TOI.
