Amritsar: Work on Rs 600-crore IIM campus starts

Amritsar: The bhoomi pujan (ground-breaking ceremony) for the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Amritsar, was held here on Monday. The ceremony was attended by Union minister for human resource development (HRD) Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ at Manawala near here.


Punjab cabinet minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa attended the ceremony in place of chief minister Amarinder Singh.



HRD minister Pokhriyal said about four years ago, late BJP leader Arun Jaitley had laid the foundation stone of the IIM Amritsar campus, but the work couldn’t begin due to non-possession of one-acre land. He said an amount of Rs 350 crore had been allocated for the first phase of the construction while an amount of Rs 250 crore had been earmarked for the second phase.

Pokhriyal emphasized on the use of management in everyday life and in various other fields. He also emphasized how IIM Amritsar could help India in achieving its dream of becoming the $5 trillion economy.

Bajwa assured to cooperate with the Union government to build a permanent campus of the IIM Amritsar, 15th IIM in the country.
