Andhra Pradesh: Construction workers demands Rs 10,000 honorarium

VISAKHAPATNAM: Construction workers in Visakhapatnam,Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts on Monday staged protests demanding that the government streamline sand supply.

Stating that the shortage of sand has adversely affected livelihood of lakhs of people, the workers also demanded Rs 10,000 as honorarium.

Coming out in their support, Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) leaders on Monday said the new sand policy has failed to serve its purpose and the sand shortage has led to several projects in the region being stalled.

“We appeal the government to either pay honorarium to workers or resolve the sand issue as lakhs of people are helpless,” said R Kumar of CITU.

The policy has not given any relief to builders as the cost of the sand is up by multiple times, said another leader of CITU, Ganga Rao. “We demand that the government streamline the sand supply and fix the price at Rs 300 per tonne,” he added.
