Andhra Pradesh elections: For migrant workers, poll season is the time to earn a quick buck

VIJAYAWADA: Migrant workers are playing a key role in election campaigns across the city. With the elections approaching fast, the demand for migrant workers has increased as political parties across AP are offering up to 1,500 per head for six hours campaign.

Vijayawada is the major hub for migrant workers and around 15,000 migrant workers from Srikakulam , Vizianagaram and Rayalaseema region reside here.

Benz Circle , Satyanarayanapuram, Madhuranagar are major hubs for migrant workers. Most of them were mason workers and Hamali workers.

Major political parties are conducting huge rallies and campaigns across the city and hiring migrant workers. "Political campaigns are helping us to make money. Politicians across the district are engaging us for their campaigns and providing free food and travel along with wage," said Kempu Anjiah a worker from Raajam.

"I migrated to Vijayawada a month ago from Markapuram of Prakasam district . One of my friends explained the high wages given to the workers who participate in campaigns. Three members of my family are participating in campaigns and we will go back to my home town to vote for my favourite contestant.," Gurram Venkata Prasad, a worker said.

Major political parties are conducting huge rallies and hiring migrant workers. Most of these workers don't have votes in the city and say they are taking part for the good wages.
