Andhra Pradesh: Housewife allegedly murdered for dowry in Anantapur district

TIRUPATI: A 22-year-woman was allegedly murdered by her husband and in-laws in the early hours of Saturday at Bachupalli village in Anantapur district . The body of the woman, identified as E Chenchu Lakshmi , was discovered with ligature marks around her neck, indicating strangulation, and bruises on her body.

Parents of Lakshmi, E Lakshmaiah and Bhagyamma, who had come over to their house on hearing the news of their daughter’s death, lodged a complaint with the police accusing, Lakshmi’s husband Gopal and in-laws of murdering their daughter for dowry .

Police revealed that it has been four months since Lakshmi married Gopal. Their families were related and they lived in Bachupalli. Lakshmi’s parents had given dowry but soon after the wedding the groom’s family demanded more dowry and often harassed Lakshmi, threatening to throw her out of the house. The parents disclosed to the police that their daughter often told them about the harassment.

Police, during their preliminary investigation, spoke to the neighbours, some of who recounted having heard commotion from Gopal’s house and some had witnessed her being thrown out of the house. Following the witnesses’ and parents’ account and taking note of the injuries on the body, police lodged a murder case against Gopal and his family. They have sent the body for conducting a postmortem .
