Andhra Pradesh: Man refuses to marry minor after she delivers his baby, held

Amaravati: A 17-year-old girl gave birth to a baby boy in Vizianagaram district of Andhra Pradesh. The police arrested an auto driver on Friday on charges of exploiting the girl sexually with a false promise to marry.

The girl initially refused to feed her baby and even care for her but, the doctors and local police had to counsel her about her responsibility.

The incident happened in Gajapathinagaram town. The girl’s mother brought her to the local government hospital on Wednesday. She gave birth to a baby boy on the same day. Since she is a minor, the hospital authorities informed the police for registering it as a medico legal case. On Friday, the police picked up the driver.

Gajapathinagaram Sub-Inspector Sanyasi Rao told Mirror, "The baby is the with her mother under the protection of the women development and child welfare department."

The girl told the police that auto driver exploited her promising to marry. But, when she conceived, he began distancing away from her. The girl’s parents, both agriculture workers, knew of the episode at an advanced stage of her pregnancy. The family put in unsuccessful efforts through elders to convince him for marriage.

The police registered a case against the driver on charge of raping a minor girl and under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
